“Big H is the name, being in good health is my game!”
I caught up with the legendary Big H – one of the MYGYM founding fathers and personal trainer to talk about how he makes being in good shape easy. At age 61, this guy is living proof that a lifetime of eating nourishing foods and working out really pays off!
What kinds of fitness training do you do and who do you work with?
I work with people of all abilities, teaching them how to use their bodies correctly. They call me the body mechanic! We often lose sight of natural movement based patterns that would have been easy for us as children – such as crawling and squatting, that are effective ways to maintain mobility and build strength. Bodyweight exercises are the main way I stay in shape.
I also teach circuit classes in the gym. Keeping going as a human is a full-time job, I always say that if you can’t find an hour for yourself every day to exercise in some form, then you have a problem! Whatever you do in the gym, if you don’t have well-rounded fitness foundations, it will affect your performance.
What sports do you do?
I do a whole mixture of different bodyweight exercises and lots of hangs. Agility is the key!
When I was a kid, I played a lot of football, I came over here when I was 5 from Jamaica. I also boxed for 12 years, but due to eye-sight complications, I couldn’t keep this up. Training got me through the frustration of not being able to continue with boxing.
What do you like about working in MYGYM?
It has atmosphere and soul and everyone’s friendly! I helped design the look and feel of the place – I didn’t want it to be like a commercial gym with mirrors and posers everywhere. I wanted a space that people could make a noise in if they wanted to, somewhere real.
Any pearls of wisdom for us?
In life, we make everything difficult and often perceive the easiest of things to be this way because we are so used to it being hard. It is not always hard! Especially when it comes to the body, you need to relax. There are no short cuts, though, and hard work eventually pays off.
What does your daily routine look like?
I get up and do some meditation or Tai Chi, I don’t drink tea or coffee, so follow this with some hot water and lemon and a smoothie. Then I either run or ride to work for more training! I never get ill and put this down to eating well and working with my body not against it.
What motivates you?
Life – I am happy to be alive and grateful to be here every day.
Who inspires you?
My mum and Dad. They said to me: “whatever you want to be, aim to be the best at it”.
Favourite workout song?
The Rocky theme tune. Can’t beat it.
I have a soft spot for apple pie or crumble and custard. (Who doesn’t?!)

Big H is available for personal training and offers a variety of different options to suit the individual.
